How to Set Up Your Ledger Hardware Wallet
A clean, practical walkthrough to get your Ledger device (Nano S / Nano S Plus / Nano X) up and running. This guide covers unboxing, initial setup, securely storing your recovery phrase, installing Ledger Live, and best practices to keep your crypto safe.
Quick note: This guide assumes your device is brand new and bought from an authorized reseller. If your device arrived opened or with tamper signs, do not use it — contact Ledger support or your seller.
What's in the box
Most Ledger boxes include the hardware device, a USB cable, a keychain / lanyard, recovery sheets, and quick-start documentation. Confirm you have:
- Ledger device (Nano S / S Plus / Nano X)
- USB-C or USB-A cable depending on model
- Recovery phrase cards (shuffled or blank cards)
- Small instruction leaflet
Before you start — checklist
- Use a personal, secure computer — avoid public or shared PCs.
- Have a pen (not a pencil) to write the recovery phrase on the provided card or a metal backup.
- Make sure you have stable internet to download Ledger Live (the app used to manage your device).
- Set aside ~20–30 minutes in a quiet place.
Step 1 — Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile app for managing your device. Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website (ledger.com
) — do not click links in emails or social media posts.
- Open a browser and go to the official Ledger website and navigate to Ledger Live.
- Download the version for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux) or grab the mobile app from the official app store.
- Run the installer and follow on-screen instructions — do not connect your Ledger until prompted.
Step 2 — Physical device setup
Now we’ll initialize the device. Follow the on-device screen prompts carefully.
- Connect the Ledger to your computer using the cable. The device will turn on and display the Ledger logo.
- Select your language with the device buttons (or touchscreen on some models).
- Choose "Set up as new device" (unless restoring from an existing recovery phrase).
- Create a PIN code. Use a PIN you can remember but not trivial (avoid birthdays, repeating digits). The device will ask you to confirm it by re-entering the PIN.
- The device will then display the recovery phrase words one by one (24 words by default on recent Ledger devices). Write these words down in order on the recovery card.
Never take photos or screenshots of your recovery phrase. Never store it in cloud notes or on your phone.
- After writing, the device will ask you to confirm a few words to verify the backup. Confirm on-device by selecting the correct words.
Step 3 — Update firmware (if prompted)
Ledger Live may prompt you to update your device firmware. Firmware updates include security improvements. Only update via Ledger Live and follow the app's instructions. Do not interrupt the process or disconnect the device mid-update.
Step 4 — Add accounts and install crypto apps
Ledger uses "apps" to manage each blockchain (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). From Ledger Live:
- Open Ledger Live and go to the "Manager" tab.
- Unlock your Ledger device (enter PIN) and allow the manager when prompted on-device.
- Search for the crypto apps you need (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and click "Install" for each.
- Once installed, go to "Accounts" > "Add account", choose the coin, and follow the prompts to create/watch accounts connected to your device.
Step 5 — Receiving and sending a test transaction
Before moving large amounts, always send a small test transaction to confirm everything works.
- In Ledger Live, click the account for the currency you want to receive, then click "Receive".
- Connect and unlock your Ledger; open the corresponding app on-device to display the receive address.
- Compare the address shown in Ledger Live with the address displayed on your device — they must match exactly. If they differ, stop and investigate.
- Send a small amount from the sending wallet/exchange. After it confirms, you can send the remaining funds.
Security best practices
- Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Anyone with that phrase can control your funds.
- Use a metal backup for long-term storage if you hold large amounts — paper degrades and can be lost or damaged.
- Use a strong, unique PIN and consider using a passphrase (optional advanced feature) for an extra layer of protection. Note: if you use a passphrase, losing it is equivalent to losing access to funds — write it down securely.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live up to date. Check release notes for security patches.
- Be wary of phishing sites and fake Ledger support. Ledger will never ask for your 24-word phrase or PIN via email or chat.
Troubleshooting common issues
- Device not detected: Try a different cable or USB port, and ensure the cable is data-capable (some cables are power-only).
- Ledger Live can't find device: Restart Ledger Live, unlock the device, and ensure you allowed the manager when prompted on-device.
- Forgot PIN: Reset the device (this erases it) and restore from your recovery phrase during setup. Only do this if you have the correct recovery phrase.
- Recovery phrase lost: If you lose your recovery phrase and still have access to the device, immediately transfer funds to a new wallet with a securely stored backup. If you lose both device and phrase, funds are unrecoverable.
FAQs
- Can someone access my crypto if they have my device?
- They still need the PIN to unlock it. However, if they obtain the 24-word recovery phrase, they can restore the wallet elsewhere and access funds — physical device alone is not enough.
- Should I store my recovery phrase digitally?
- No. Avoid photos, cloud storage, or unencrypted digital notes. Use paper + metal backup in different secure locations (e.g., safe, safety deposit box).
- What is a passphrase?
- A passphrase is an additional word or phrase appended to your 24-word seed to create a new, separate wallet (also called a "hidden wallet"). It adds security but also increases responsibility — if you forget it, funds are lost.
Final checklist before you go
- Ledger Live installed from the official site.
- Device PIN set and remembered.
- 24-word recovery phrase written down in order and stored securely.
- Firmware updated if prompted.
- Installed apps for coins you use and verified with a small test transaction.
Follow these steps carefully and you’ll significantly reduce the risk of loss or theft. Hardware wallets like Ledger are one of the safest ways to custody crypto when used correctly.
